When Patreon launched, says Patreon CTO Sam Yam, he and his co-founder Jack Conte were convinced that artists would want to collect revenue when they released new work. In fact, they found that 95% of artists were using a monthly recurring payment plan that wasn’t tied to content releases. Yam presents a few other examples of how initial plans turned out to be off the mark, and explains that it’s more important to just get going than to perfectly anticipate the mentality of users.
