The Humble Audacity of Leadership

In 2010, Tom Byers and Tina Seelig asked Heidi Roizen to become a lecturer at the Stanford School of Engineering. Roizen agreed, but she had a vision to do more. A venture capitalist and entrepreneur, Roizen saw the positive influence of the Mayfield Fellows Program on its undergraduate cohorts and wanted to create that opportunity for graduate students. She explains, “I wanted to get 12 of the best and brightest, the people with that spark, who were ready to do something big.”

A few years later, Roizen, a partner at Threshold Ventures, manifested that program into existence alongside Seelig, together launching the Threshold Venture Fellows program. More than 100 alumni have participated in the TVF program over the last 12 years, supporting fellows through discussion sessions, guest speakers, and pairings with executive and alumni mentors. Roizen built a thriving, essential network of founders and thinkers who not only share knowledge but foster an inquiry- and evidence-driven mindset within their industries.

This month, STVP and the TVF community honored Roizen, alongside Eclipse Ventures partner Aidan Madigan-Curtis, for her service and contributions to the community, recognizing her impact as she continues to make her mark in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

TVF will continue to be helmed by strong and inspiring leadership – Threshold’s founder and managing partner Emily Melton will lead the program starting in the fall with TVF alum Tess Hatch, Managing Director of Stifel Venture Bank and an STVP advisory board member.

At the celebration, the current cohort of fellows gifted Roizen with a fictional movie poster depicting her as the “Hero of the Valley.” They took turns noting the ways in which Roizen “leads with humanity,” sharing her pieces of wisdom that have helped shape the experiences of dozens of fellows over the years.

Tom Byers shared Roizen’s origin story with STVP, saying, “Our fellows programs are really, really special, unlike anything in the entrepreneurship world, and we pull it off because of people like Heidi Roizen.” He added, “She has humble audacity, the perfect combination – and something anyone on the planet who has been lucky enough to interact with Heidi knows about.”

Melton spoke about what an honor it will be to continue to build the deep community Roizen has fostered. “We have been privileged to get to work with young founders, and one of the things we always grapple with is, how does venture capital actually scale,” Melton said. “Heidi’s found a way to have that large impact through this program, and we’re so thrilled to get to continue to do this work.”
